Hooker Painting Her Toenails

Hooker Painting Her Toenails

I am a great fan of street photography. I think many powerful and moving images have been taken on the street. But this one gives me pause.

The photo itself I have no objections to. I think it’s interesting and it tells a story. The bit I can’t quite wrap my head around is posting it in Flickr humour pools. That, and going on for paragraph after paragraph making derisive comments about prostitutes and the people who try to help them, not to mention using a 200mm zoom lens to take the picture from across the street.

Prostitution is a dangerous profession, and the Pickton trial in Vancouver has done a great deal to highlight this fact. I hardly think that these women are deserving of ridicule for what they do.

it is a wonderful photo and that is what i thought when i first saw it and then i read what you wrote and then i went to the flickr site and now i am left with a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach … i also hardly think these women or anyone for that matter are deserving of ridicule for what they do … i feel sad now …

and then i see all the cat photos on your flickr zeitgeist and i smile ;-)

Yeah, I don’t understand the lack of compassion that was shown in the comments and description. I thought the shot of a woman painting her toenails was kind of sweet and sad at the same time.

And yes, mass quantities of cat pictures do tend to blast the ugliness away! Especially when Ginger takes a flying leap, that gives me no end of pleasure.
